The shemagh was deployed by military since world war II. Especially the British SASISpecial Air Service took a liking to this garment in open Landrovers during the dusty North African campaign. Since then an olive green shemagh has been standard uniform accessory in the British army. During the gulfwar the shemagh was distributed in camel/sand configurations.
You can take my falafel and hummus, but don’t fucking touch my keffiyeh!
The Palestinian keffiyeh has become a symbol of Palestinian nationalism. Outside of the Middle East and North Africa, the keffiyeh first gained popularity among activists supporting the Palestinians in the conflict with Israel and, to some, it is an icon of Palestinian solidarity. The wearing of the keffiyeh often comes with criticism from various political fractions in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
