Busseronne from French Bourgeron
Our Kansas busseronne got it’s handsome name from French bourgeron. This term derives from bourre “raw wool” and describes a practical pull-over garment for a specific work field or purpose, in order to protect one’s clothing from the rough environment. Some bourgerons or smock-frocks would even flip inside-out for fast transition between work and representation. This particular busseronne has it’s origin from sailors and fishermen at sea and in port, where it served them well.
Worker’s simple and material saving marine blue busseronne has been the garment of choise for protest movements and revolutionaries since the French revolution in 1793. For instance, during 1968 demonstrations the busseronne was the anti symbol to the opposing jacket and tie.
