Danmark is a photo composition of a wall mount National Arms of Denmark in the deepest detail and warmest colour. Depth of field is emphasized by the magnificent bokeh. Engraved in the montage are the lyrics by H. C. Andersen the Danes know as “I Danmark er jeg født”.

I Danmark er jeg født

The year of 1848 leads to the first Schleswig civil war, “The Three-Year War” between Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein backed by Prussia. Same year King Frederik VII resigns and terminates autocracy in the state if Denmark. The national liberals form the first constitution of Denmark valid as of June 15, 1949. Meanwhile, In the Danish West Indies the enslaved revolts and are unslaved same year.

Hans Christian Andersen & Danish Identity

In the years following the violent three-year war 1848-1850 a strong sense of anti-German nationality rose among the Danes. Because of this some questioned the Danish perspective of H. C. Andersen. This he remarks in his diary June 20 1850:

”Aldrig har jeg følt mig mere dansk end under krigen, … mens mange udanske spiller danske herrer.”

“Never have I felt more Danish than during the war, … while many undanish are pretending to be Danish Lords.”

Denmark, My Fatherland

H. C. Andersen went public on May 3rd 1850. The newspaper The Fatherland issued his new poem “Danmark, mit Fædreland / Denmark, My Fatherland” that was well recieved. Less than one week later on May 8th 1850 the composer Henrik Rung premieres “I Danmark er jeg født / In Denmark I am born” for male choir at a charity concert for the battle of Fredericia. Lyrics are based entirely on the words by H. C. Andersen.

Another National Anthem …

Denmark has not one but two official national anthems. And now this …. “I Danmark er jeg født” grew on the Danes. Many requests as this tune for national anthem has been put forward. A declaration of love for country and language, with a sincere immediate catch and joy of recognition.

I Danmark er jeg født

1. I Danmark er jeg født, dér har jeg hjemme,
dér har jeg rod, derfra min verden går;
du danske sprog, du er min moders stemme,
så sødt velsignet du mit hjerte når.
Du danske, friske strand,
hvor oldtids kæmpegrave
står mellem æblegård og humlehave.
Dig elsker jeg! – Danmark, mit fædreland!

2. Hvor reder sommeren vel blomstersengen
mer rigt end her ned til den åbne strand?
Hvor står fuldmånen over kløverengen
så dejligt som i bøgens fædreland?
Du danske, friske strand,
hvor Dannebrogen vajer –
Gud gav os den – Gud giv den bedste sejer! –
Dig elsker jeg! – Danmark, mit fædreland!

3. Engang du herre var i hele Norden,
bød over England – nu du kaldes svag;

I grønne øer, mit hjertes hjem hernede!
Dig elsker jeg! – Danmark, mit fædreland!
